ORKG supports assigning handles to arbitrary ORKG Resources. Handles are assigned via handle.tib.eu. To assign a handle to a resource, a resource first has to be published. Publishing a resource is similar to publishing other content types (e.g. ORKG Comparisons and ORKG Reviews). When publishing, selected statements are persistent to ensure that data cannot be modified for a published resource, this ensures that data assigned to a handle is immutable.

Assign handles via the user interface

Assigning a handle is possible via resources page via the ORKG web interface.

1. In case you didn't create a resource yet, create a new resource.
2. On the resource page, click on "Edit" in the right top.

1. Assign a template to the resource. This is a required step, the template determines which data is preserved when publishing.

1. Add data for the newly added properties coming from the template.

1. Once you are ready entering the data, click the "Publish" button on top.

1. Select the template you want to use for publishing. Only the data related to the selected template will be published. Also select "Assign handle to resource" to ensure a handle is assigned to the published resource.

1. After publishing, you will be redirected to the published resource page. You can see the message on top, showing links to the publish history and the live (i.e. unpublished) resource. Also the handle link is displayed. Finally, the data browser indicates that the displayed data is a snapshot taken at a specific date.

Assign handles programmatically

It is possible to assign handles via the API as well. First a resource needs to be created, a template assigned, statements created, and finally the resource needs to be published.
