In the last 30 years, the microcalorimeter coupled to an X-ray optic system has become a significant capability for laboratory astrophysics measurements and space observatories. Its benefits derive from its resolving power of ~ 1000, quantum efficiency approaching 100%, and bandwidth that spans the X-ray energies from 0.2 keV to 10 keV.
